Aquaforest Phosphate Test Pro — fast PO4 test with 40 measurements for marine aquariums

The Phosphate Test Pro measures phosphate (PO4³⁻) concentration in marine and reef water. Recipe optimized for the low values typical of reef tanks — Aquaforest states that PO4 in a marine aquarium should not exceed 0.02 mg/L (ppm). Each kit runs about 40 measurements and includes all necessary accessories (reagents, vial, syringes, instructions, color chart).

Essential test to drive a probiotic method, regulate Fauna Marin / Zeo / GFO regimes, or trace a hidden PO4 source (food, new sand, fresh rock). Aquaforest ICP-OES certified for reading reliability in the critical reef range.

Using the Phosphate Test Pro

  • Frequency: weekly on a reef tank, twice weekly on precisely tuned SPS tanks.
  • Procedure: add reagents to the sample, shake, wait for colorimetric development, compare to the chart.
  • Caution: follow the exact timing in the instructions — color drifts quickly.
  • Sampling: avoid recently fed zones that give artificially high readings.

Reef phosphate targets

  • High-growth SPS tanks: 0.02-0.05 ppm.
  • Mixed-reef tanks: 0.03-0.10 ppm.
  • Soft coral tanks: 0.05-0.15 ppm tolerated.
  • SPS alert: below 0.01 ppm, nutritional bleaching risk.
  • High alert: above 0.25 ppm, algae bloom and calcification slow-down.

Why choose Aquaforest at ReefSolution

  • Nitrate Test Pro — the NO3 test to run alongside to drive the NP ratio.
  • Lab PO4+ 200 ml — the phosphate solution to dose if the tank runs ULNS with PO4 too low.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ideal SPS PO4 really 0.02 ppm?

That's the Aquaforest reference and the average the high-growth SPS community accepts. Some very mature tanks run fine at 0.05 ppm, others need 0.01-0.02 to preserve coloration. Weekly tracking helps find each tank's balance point. PO4 too low is as dangerous as PO4 too high — zooxanthellae need nutrients.

Why does PO4 vary so much depending on the time of the test?

Phosphates are quickly taken up by algae, zooxanthellae, and GFO media. A test 1-2 h after feeding shows a spike, while a test before the evening meal shows a trough. For comparable readings, always test at the same time of day.

How many measurements before restocking?

About 40 measurements. On a stable tank running weekly tests, a kit covers 9-10 months. On a tank tuning NP Pro (two tests a week), duration drops to 4-5 months.
