Brightwell CoralAmino — free-form amino acids for coral coloration and growth
The Brightwell CoralAmino is a complex of free-form amino acids formulated in the same ratios measured in stony coral tissues. Brightwell Aquatics states the product is used by professional coral farms to accelerate growth and intensify coloration — on SPS as well as LPS and soft corals.
The "free-form" wording means the amino acids are directly available to the coral for tissue rebuild and growth — no digestion step required. Some of those amino acids also play a documented role in pigment formation, which is why the coloration effect rides alongside the growth effect.
What CoralAmino is for and when to use it
- Corals pale on ULNS — SPS tanks where NO₃/PO₄ has dropped too low and tissue density and pigmentation are fading.
- Growth acceleration — fragging or coloring protocol where free-form amino acids are documented by Brightwell as accelerators.
- Post-shipping recovery — corals just off transit, temporarily in a receiving system, given an enriched supplement before the final aquascape.
- Target feeding — direct dosing over open polyps at feeding-response time, for maximum uptake.
Brightwell official dosing
- Broadcast feeding: 1 mL (~20 drops) per 50 US gal (189 L) daily, in an area of strong flow.
- Target feeding: pour 1 mL (~20 drops) into a small container, draw with syringe or pipette, then slowly dispense 2-4 inches upstream of the target coral.
- Maximum dose: 5 mL per 50 US gal per day for the first few weeks, then adjust to biological response.
- Turn off the skimmer and any mechanical filtration before dosing, and wait 10 to 15 minutes before restarting them.
- Do not put the glass dropper directly into aquarium water. If contaminated, refrigerate the bottle until used up.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I dose CoralAmino?
Brightwell publishes a daily dose: 1 mL (about 20 drops) per 50 US gal, broadcast into an area of strong flow. Absolute maximum is 5 mL per 50 US gal per day for the first few weeks — do not exceed, at the risk of saturating biological capacity.
How do I target-feed CoralAmino on SPS?
Pour 1 mL into a small container, draw with syringe or pipette, then slowly dispense 2 to 4 inches upstream of the target coral — Brightwell specifies those distances so flow carries the solution to the polyps without excessive dilution. Ideal when SPS show their feeding response.
Do I need to turn the skimmer off before dosing CoralAmino?
Yes — Brightwell recommends turning off the skimmer and any mechanical filtration just before dosing, then waiting 10 to 15 minutes before restarting. That window lets the amino acids be taken up by corals rather than exported by skimmer foam.
What if the glass dropper touched aquarium water?
Brightwell is categorical: never dip the glass dropper directly into aquarium water. If contaminated, refrigerate the bottle until finished to slow biological degradation of the product.
