The Flameback Angelfish ( Centropyge acanthops ) is a magnificent dwarf angelfish sporting a striking orange flame back contrasting with a deep blue-violet body. This spectacular fish is a colorful and relatively peaceful addition to the reef aquarium.
Distinctive appearance: This stunning dwarf angelfish has a deep blue-violet body with a vibrant flame orange back and dorsal fin. Its pelvic and anal fins are yellow-orange, creating a striking contrast that immediately catches the eye.
Main features:
- Spectacular coloration with a unique flame orange back
- Adult size: 8-10 cm
- Semi-aggressive temperament, territorial with other dwarf angels
- More peaceful than the Flame Angel (C. loricula)
- Compatible with reef tanks, but with caution.
- Suitable for intermediate to advanced aquarists
Needs and maintenance:
- Minimum volume: 200 litres (to reduce territoriality)
- Temperature: 24-27°C
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for algae. Offer dried seaweed (nori), spirulina, mysis shrimp, and enriched frozen brine shrimp. Feed 2-3 times per day.
- Aquarium: Plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Lid essential (can pop off). Mature aquarium recommended.
- Behavior: Territorial with other dwarf angels. Introduce last to minimize aggression.
Compatibility:
- In reef tanks: Considered "reef-safe with caution". May occasionally nip soft corals, LPS corals, and giant clam mantles, especially if not fed sufficiently.
- Compatibility: Avoid keeping with other dwarf angelfish except in very large aquariums. Compatible with fish of similar size. May intimidate small fish.
- Health: Susceptible to skin diseases when stressed. Quarantine recommended for new specimens.
Introduction tips: Introduce last into the aquarium to minimize territorial problems. Ensure a varied and abundant diet to reduce the risk of corals being pinched.
