Hymenocera elegans (picta) (Harlequin shrimp)

The Hymenocera elegans , Harlequin Shrimp, is one of the most spectacular shrimp in the aquarium hobby — large, flattened claws resembling leaves and a white coloration speckled with round pink, mauve, or orange spots edged in blue. An incomparable visual gem.

Warning — Specialized diet required: Harlequin Shrimp feed exclusively on starfish. Their diet must be carefully planned before purchase.

Food — A critical point

Eats ONLY starfish. Regularly provide Linckia , Fromia , or cushion starfish. The Chocolate Chip starfish ( Protoreaster nodosus ) is often used as a feeder starfish. Keep a supply in a separate container.

Recommended conditions

• Temperature: 24–27°C — Salinity: 1.024–1.026
• pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
• Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH — Minimum volume: 100L

Compatibility

Harmless to corals and fish. Dangerous only to starfish.
