The shell is part of the product

It is not packaging — it is the whole point. Hikari writes that the shell can be used by longer toothed fish to gnaw and grind down the length of their teeth, a natural instinct, and states that the product promotes tooth grinding.

That is the classic problem with puffers and triggerfish in an aquarium: with nothing hard to gnaw on, the teeth keep growing until the fish can no longer eat. Soft food does not solve that.

A freshwater clam for marine fish

A detail few people know: Hikari specifies this is a freshwater species, ideal for marine animals. It intends the product for larger marine fish that require higher protein levels, and describes an excellent protein source with natural amino acids and naturally occurring fatty acids.

How to feed it — read the nuance

Hikari writes an instruction you will not find anywhere else: use it as a daily treat, feeding no more than your fish will consume within 30 minutes of grazing. Then it immediately adds: this product is not intended for 30 minutes of continuous feeding of the meat portion. In other words, the fish grazes the shell; it is not eating 30 minutes of meat.

Remove whatever is left once the feeding period ends. As across the range, the manufacturer reminds you that live or frozen food is fed for variety, not as a replacement for complete nutrition.
