Nassarius Sand Snail
Available
The Nassarius Sand Snail ( Nassarius spp.) is an essential bottom-dwelling snail in any reef aquarium with a sandy substrate. These small snails bury themselves completely in the sand between meals and quickly emerge as soon as they detect food — their spectacular reactivity has earned them the nickname "vultures of the reef".
His role in the baccalaureate
Specialized detritivores — consume decaying organic matter, food scraps buried in the sand, and small dead organisms. Their continuous burrowing oxygenates the sand at depth, preventing the formation of anoxic zones that produce hydrogen sulfide. Complementary to Cerith and Turbo.
Recommended conditions
- Temperature: 23–27°C
- Salinity: 1.023–1.026
- pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
- Sandy substrate required — minimum 3–5 cm
Behavior
They spend most of their time buried in the sand. As soon as prey is placed in the tank, their siphon emerges and they quickly converge on the food source—a spectacular sight. They are completely harmless to corals, fish, and invertebrates.
Recommended dosage
1 per 4–5L of sandy substrate for effective mixing.
