The Red Sea R42221 return connector is the genuine fitting that joins the sump return pump to the riser plumbing of a REEFER aquarium. 16 mm diameter.

Two generations, two parts

Red Sea changed this fitting between tank generations. Pick the right one before you order:

G1 (R42221) — REEFER Nano, 170, 170A, XL 200, 250, 350, plus MAX E-170 and MAX E-260.
G2 (R42221G2) — REEFER 170 and 200 from the G2 generation.

The two are not interchangeable. If you're unsure, check the exact name printed on your tank — or write to us with the model and we'll settle it with you before you buy.

When it gets replaced

This is the part you go looking for when a return fitting weeps despite being properly tightened, when a thread has been over-torqued, or when you're converting the return plumbing to rigid pipe and starting from the original fitting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether I need G1 or G2?

Your tank's generation decides, not its size. A first-generation REEFER 170 takes the G1; a REEFER 170 G2 takes the G2. The full name is printed on your aquarium — when in doubt, write to us.

How is this different from the 20-25 mm connector?

Diameter and target tanks. The 16 mm covers REEFER Nano through 350 and the MAX E range; the 20-25 mm (R42222) covers REEFER 450, XL 425 and XL 525.

Can rigid plumbing be threaded onto it?

Plenty of reefkeepers start from this fitting when converting to rigid pipe. Red Sea publishes no official procedure for that modification — write to us before buying your fittings and we'll look at your setup with you.
