Model

The Red Sea REEFER Skimmer DC Pump Upgrade Kit converts an AC-pump REEFER Skimmer into a Self-Leveling DC skimmer. The kit replaces the original Sicce AC pump with the variable-flow PSK DC-1200 pump, and adds the dual-action skim sensor along with the collection cup lid designed to hold it. You end up with exactly the same skimmer as the DC model sold new, starting from the one you already own.

Important: the Red Sea ReefRun Dual Controller is required and is not included in this kit. The PSK DC-1200 pump and the skim sensor have no built-in control electronics — the kit provides the cable to connect them to the controller, but the controller itself is sold separately. Without it, the upgrade does not run. The ReefRun Dual can also drive a ReefRun DC return pump at the same time — one controller for two devices.

Choose the variant that matches your skimmer

All three variants use the same PSK DC-1200 pump. What differs is the collection cup lid, fitted to your model. Select the variant matching the skimmer you already own: RSK 300, RSK 600, or RSK 900.

In the ReefBeat app, you'll then need to specify your model. The controller applies the default intensity calibrated for it: same pump, but each reaction chamber and each venturi has its own optimal point for air flow and air-water contact time.

What the upgrade brings

Self-Leveling — no more overflows

This is the real reason to do this upgrade. The dual-action skim sensor continuously monitors two things:

  • Over-skim regulation: the probe in the neck measures foam wetness. When it exceeds the threshold you configured, the pump immediately reduces its intensity, then raises it bit by bit until stable skimming is restored. The threshold is adjustable in the app.
  • Full-cup regulation: the probe in the collection cup detects when it needs emptying and sends you a notification. The pump reduces its intensity to keep aerating the water rather than shutting everything down.

This is not a float switch that cuts everything off: the regulation is gradual, and the skimmer keeps circulating and aerating continuously.

Variable flow and ReefBeat control

The original AC pump runs at a fixed speed. The PSK DC-1200 adjusts its power in real time, to within 1% in the app. You also unlock daily schedules (up to 10 slots), the Feed and Maintenance quick actions, remote control, and notifications for a blocked or dry-running pump.

Operation

The variable-flow DC pump produces less vibration than a fixed-speed AC pump. Combined with the air silencer and anti-vibration feet already on your skimmer, operation is smoother than with the original pump. The noise level still depends on your installation — sump type, surface under the skimmer, cabinet resonance.

Specifications after the upgrade

Once converted, your skimmer has the characteristics of the corresponding DC model:

  • RSK 300 DC: Height 53 cm | Air flow 500 L/h | Water flow 1,000 L/h | Water height 16 to 20 cm | Power consumption 20W
  • RSK 600 DC: Height 56 cm | Air flow 750 L/h | Water flow 1,500 L/h | Water height 18 to 20 cm | Power consumption 25W
  • RSK 900 DC: Height 59 cm | Air flow 900 L/h | Water flow 2,000 L/h | Water height 20 to 24 cm | Power consumption 30W

Pump common to all three: Sicce PSK DC-1200 needle-wheel, variable flow. Maintained ORP: 350+ mV.

Kit contents

  • 1 x PSK DC-1200 needle-wheel pump (DC, variable flow)
  • 1 x Dual-action skim sensor
  • 1 x REEFER collection cup lid fitted for the skim sensor
  • 1 x Controller cable
  • 1 x Universal power supply
  • 1 x AC power cable
  • 1 x Instruction manual

Not included: the Red Sea ReefRun Dual Controller, required to operate the DC pump and the skim sensor. Sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need anything besides this kit to convert my skimmer?

Yes — the Red Sea ReefRun Dual Controller, sold separately. It's what powers and drives the PSK DC-1200 pump and the skim sensor. The kit includes the cable to connect them to it, but not the controller. If you're also planning a ReefRun DC return pump, the same controller handles both devices — you only buy one.

Which variant should I choose for my skimmer?

The one named after your current skimmer: RSK 300, RSK 600, or RSK 900. The PSK DC-1200 pump is identical in all three kits — it's the collection cup lid, fitted to your model to hold the skim sensor, that changes. Once installed, select your model in ReefBeat to apply the correct default intensity.

Is the converted skimmer really equivalent to a new DC model?

Yes. The body, reaction chamber, cone, and collection cup are already identical between the AC and DC versions — only the pump changes, plus the lid to accommodate the sensor. After the conversion, you have the same specifications and the same features as the DC model sold new.

What happens to my original AC pump?

It comes off the click-in/out bracket and you keep it. It's a working Sicce PSK pump — hold onto it as a spare or for another use. The DC pump takes its place on the same bracket.

Does Self-Leveling really work?

Yes. The solid-state sensor continuously monitors foam wetness and adjusts the pump's power gradually, not on/off. After feeding, a water change, or a salinity fluctuation, the pump reduces just enough to stabilize the foam, then rises again. At ReefSolution, we use this technology on our own systems and the results are remarkable. Sensor calibration is done on first use, guided step by step in the app.
