The Spider Conch ( Lambis spp.) is an imposing and spectacular marine gastropod, recognizable by its large shell adorned with long, characteristic finger-like projections—resembling a spider's legs, hence its name. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it is one of the largest substrate cleaners available for reef aquariums. Its sculpted shell also makes it a striking decorative piece.

His role in the baccalaureate

Powerful bottom cleaner — consumes algae on sandy substrates, debris, and decomposing organic matter. Its active sand tilling significantly contributes to substrate oxygenation and the prevention of anoxic zones.

Recommended conditions

  • Temperature: 24–27°C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • pH: 7.8–8.4 (normal natural day/night fluctuation in a reef tank)
  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH — Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Sandy substrate required — minimum 8–10 cm
  • Large tank required — minimum 250L due to its size

Behavior

Primarily nocturnal but active during the day in well-lit tanks. Its shell-like projections can snag corals as it moves—allow sufficient space. It rights itself using these projections.
