Gobiodon okinawae (Yellow Clown Goby)

This small, bright yellow goby is a charming and entertaining addition to reef aquariums. Unlike other gobies, it doesn't dig in the sand but prefers to perch among the branches of corals, particularly Acropora . It's an easy choice for beginners, provided its behavior and habitat are respected.

Key features
  • Difficulty level: Easy.
  • Adult size: Up to 4 cm.
  • Temperament: Peaceful, but territorial towards its own kind in small aquariums.
  • Minimum volume: 40 liters (10 gallons) for one specimen, 120 liters (30 gallons) or more for a couple or small group.

Aquarium conditions
  • Temperature: 22-28 °C.
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025.
  • pH: 8.1–8.4.
  • Décor: Provide live rock with plenty of small hiding places and branching corals for perching. A lid is recommended, as it may jump out when stressed.
  • Special feature: It secretes a bitter and toxic mucus that protects it from most predators.

Food
  • Type: Carnivore, micro-planktivore.
  • Diet: In the wild, it feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans. In an aquarium, it accepts frozen foods (mysis, enriched brine shrimp), flakes, and pellets.
  • Frequency: Two to three small portions per day. It is important to ensure that he eats, as more active fish could outcompete him.

Compatibility and behavior
  • In reef aquariums: Considered safe for most corals and invertebrates. However, it may pinch the polyps of some SPS corals (such as Acropora ) when preparing to spawn, which can cause slight tissue recession.
  • Compatibility: Gets along well with other small, peaceful fish. Avoid large, aggressive fish that might intimidate it.
  • Reproduction: It is a bidirectional hermaphrodite: individuals can change sex in both directions to form a pair.
