Aquaforest AF110 — fluidized media reactor 2,800 ml for carbon GFO and zeolite

The AF110 Media Reactor is the mid-tier model in Aquaforest's fluidized lineup, sized for 200-400 L reef tanks. Useful volume 2,800 ml, 11 cm diameter chamber, about 39 cm tall. 20 mm fittings more generous than the AF90 — compatible with stronger external pumps and sustained flow. Clear acrylic column lets you watch the fluidized media at work.

Suits all reef media — activated carbon, GFO, zeolite, biopellets, resins — with capacity that covers several months of use without frequent reload on mid-sized tanks.

Typical AF110 applications

  • Regular activated carbon — 1-2 kg of Aquaforest carbon or equivalent for 200-400 L tanks.
  • High-performance GFO — sustained phosphate removal on mature SPS or densely stocked LPS.
  • Adapted zeolite method — Aquaforest ZEO Mix protocol or zeovit on mature tanks.
  • ULNS biopellets — solid carbon dosing for very low-nutrient SPS tanks.
  • Media combination — two media stacked in separate layers for double action.

Setup and flow

  • External pump: not included — appropriate pump 500-1,500 L/h per media.
  • 20 mm fittings: compatible with standard reef plumbing.
  • Placement: sump or external, vertical required for proper fluidization.
  • Media rinse: systematic before loading to remove fines.
  • Flow tuning: gentle agitation without ejection — watch the media during the first minutes of operation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stack two different media in the AF110?

Yes — using Aquaforest grids or compatible grids to separate layers, you can load activated carbon on top and GFO below, for example. Watch that fluidization stays effective for both layers — otherwise, use two AF110s in series.

Does the AF110 fluidize biopellets well?

Yes — biopellets need relatively high flow (800-1,500 L/h on the AF110). Fluidization prevents pellet clumping and keeps the bacterial exchange surface maximal. Check regularly that pellets haven't moved or melted over time.

Is the AF110 compatible with an Aquaforest AF Pump?

Yes — Aquaforest sells AF Pump models calibrated for its reactors. The AF Pump 1000 suits an AF110 on medium regime (carbon, GFO). For biopellets or zeolite needing more flow, the AF Pump 2000 is recommended.
