AI Prime 16HD Freshwater Black 55W — Planted Aquarium LED with Moonlight - AquaIllumination
Available
The AI Prime 16HD Freshwater isn't a reef light with the spectrum toned down. It's a different fixture in the same housing, and AquaIllumination's LED list proves it: ten of its fifteen LEDs are white.
55W, dedicated moonlight channel, Mobius app. AquaIllumination calls it perfect for your planted tank.
The Cluster — and Why It Matters
AquaIllumination publishes the exact composition:
- 6 Cool White
- 4 Warm White
- 2 Blue
- 1 Photo Red
- 1 Green
- 1 Moonlight
Compare that to the Prime 16HD Reef: 4 Cool White, 4 Blue, 4 Royal Blue, 1 Photo Red, 1 Green, 1 Violet, 1 UV, plus 1 moonlight. Twelve of its sixteen LEDs are blues and cool whites.
The Freshwater has two blues and no royal blue at all. No violet, no UV. Those are precisely the wavelengths coral zooxanthellae need — and they aren't there. That's a design choice, not a shortfall: freshwater plants work in a broad white spectrum, not deep blue.
The 6 Cool / 4 Warm Mix
This is the most interesting detail in the cluster. Six cool whites and four warm whites is what lets you shift your tank's color temperature without changing fixtures.
More cool: a crisp, clinical look, good for dense green plants. More warm: the reds in your fish and plants come forward and the tank reads more natural. The Photo Red and Green fill in — that's what avoids the blue-purple look of old "plant" fixtures.
Dedicated Moonlight Channel
Per AquaIllumination, the dedicated moonlight channel simulates natural lunar color and intensity. It's a separate LED, not a hack with the blue channel at 5%.
Worth noting: the Prime Fuge doesn't have one. Of the three Primes, only the Reef and the Freshwater carry a moonlight.
80° Optics
The Prime Freshwater ships with 80 degree lenses, custom designed, boasting over 90% optical efficiency, with a diffuse exit surface. AquaIllumination describes them as the best balance of power and spread.
Control
- Mobius: free iOS and Android app — 24-hour programming, per-channel control
- myAI: also compatible
- Neptune Apex: through Apex Fusion with the MXM module
Fan Maintenance — True of Every LED Fixture
This applies to every LED fixture, whatever the brand: they cool through a fan, and a fan working through dust makes the unit run hot. Heat is one of the big causes of failure in aquarium lighting.
AquaIllumination documents this officially for Prime fixtures — the Freshwater shares the same housing as the Reef and the Fuge. Here's their official video:
Our advice from the shop: put it on your calendar, not in your memory. Compressed air on the grill, two minutes. It's true of every LED — the Prime just seems worse because there are more of them out there.
Mounting — Sold Separately
No mount is included. The box holds the fixture, the power adapter, and the quick start guide. The Freshwater uses all the Prime mounting hardware: Tank Mount, Hanging Kit, or Flex Arm in 12 and 18 inch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use the AI Prime Freshwater on a reef tank?
No. Look at the LED list AquaIllumination publishes: the Freshwater has 2 Blue and that's it — no Royal Blue, no Violet, no UV. Those are precisely the wavelengths coral zooxanthellae need. For a coral tank, the Prime 16HD Reef is what you want.
What's the difference between the Prime Freshwater and the Prime Reef?
Spectrum and power. The Freshwater draws 55W with 15 LEDs, ten of them white (6 cool, 4 warm) and only 2 blue. The Reef draws 59W with 17 LEDs, eight of them blue (4 Blue, 4 Royal Blue) plus violet and UV. Same housing, same app, same mounts — two fixtures built for two different kinds of photosynthesis.
Does the AI Prime Freshwater have a moonlight channel?
Yes, a dedicated moonlight LED. Per AquaIllumination, it simulates natural lunar color and intensity. It's a separate channel, programmable independently in Mobius — not the blue channel dialed down to 5%.
What PAR does the AI Prime Freshwater put out?
AquaIllumination doesn't publish a PAR value for the Prime Freshwater, unlike the Prime Reef. If you see a number circulating elsewhere, it didn't come from the manufacturer. Send us your planted tank's dimensions and depth and we'll tell you what makes sense.
Is the mount included?
No. The box holds the fixture, the power adapter, and the guide. The Freshwater uses all the Prime hardware: Tank Mount, Hanging Kit, or Flex Arm in 12 or 18 inch. No Prime fixture ships with mounting hardware.
